CHAPTER 12
âIf it isnât the two most handsome men Iâve ever seen,â Mary Elle said as she walked over to Thomas and Ryder.
Thomas had Ryder hoisted on his shoulders as they picked apples at Willow Acres. Ryder smiled when he saw his grandmother, extended his arm as high as he could, and picked off an apple. He then extended his hand to Mary Elle, offering her the apple.
âAw, thank you, sweetie. Are you ready to go back home to your mama?â Mary Elle said, taking the apple from him. She tried to take Ryder off of Thomasâ shoulders, but he wasnât having it.
âI guess he wants to stay and work,â Thomas said.
âHard working just like your grandpa T.â
âWeâll finish this row; then Iâll drop him off at your office.â
âOkay, if you donât mind,â Mary Elle said as she took her phone out of her pocket to take a quick picture of Thomas and Ryder picking apples.
âI donât mind at all,â Thomas said as they moved on to the next tree.
âIâm going to pass by the grocery store before taking Ryder to Melâs. Do you want anything?â
âGet me some chocolates I like with the peanuts, please?â
âTheyâre already on my shopping list. Anything else? Iâm going to get a few things for Mel, too. I doubt sheâs had time to go get groceries with the twins.â
âHas she said when sheâll return to work? No pressure. I hope she knows she can bring the kids if she wants to.â
âIt hasnât come up yet, but I know she goes stir-crazy being at home all the time.â
âIâve been toying with an idea for a while now, but I havenât mentioned it to anyone yet...â
âWhat is it?â Mary Elle asked, intrigued.
âWhat if we convert one of the cabins into a daycare?â
âA daycare?â Mary Elle asked, confused. This was one of the last things she was expecting Thomas to suggest.
âChild care is expensive, and we have the space to offer an affordable option. Many of our employees could benefit from it, and we could make it available to everyone in town. We already offer horse riding lessons and summer camps. When my grandfather founded Willow Acres, it was with families in mind. I canât believe I hadnât thought of it until now.â
âIt sounds like something worth looking into,â Mary Elle said.
âIâll run it by David and see what he says.â
âYouâre the best,â she said before walking back to her office.
Mary Elle fell more in love with Thomas every day. It never ceased to amaze her just how wonderful he was. He was giving and thoughtful. He made her days brighter and made her want to be a better person.
